Billing

Billing should never be a blocker to using Shorebird’s tools. Customers are met where they are, whether that means flexible payment methods, enterprise invoicing, or custom terms. If you’re building with Flutter, building with Shorebird should be just as easy.

Shorebird uses Stripe for all billing and payments, and accepts any payment method that Stripe supports. You can view more details in Stripe’s Supported Payment Methods documentation.

Invoices are sent at the end of each billing period by Stripe. Since they are sent by Stripe, they do not use your Shorebird account email, but rather the email associated with your Stripe account. In most cases, these emails are the same, but you can change them to be different.

If you’d like invoices sent to a different email address than the one you use to log in, change it in Stripe’s billing portal:

  1. In the Shorebird console, open Account from your account menu, then click Manage plan.
  2. On the Plan page, find the Payment card and click Manage billing information.

This opens Stripe’s billing portal, where you can update the email invoices are sent to, along with your payment method and billing address.

On an Enterprise plan, the Plan page has no Payment card; contact contact@shorebird.dev to change where invoices go.

Flexible options are provided to accommodate every team and product, whether it’s an indie/hobby project or a globally launched enterprise application. See the pricing page for more information.

Most customers can easily get started with the self-service Pro and Business plans; see Plans & Upgrading for how to upgrade, switch, or cancel. If you need invoice billing, tax support, alternative payment methods, custom contract/procurement process, or volume pricing beyond the Business plan’s 1,000,000 included patch installs a month, please reach out regarding an Enterprise Plan.

Billing is tied to the organization’s owner’s account, not to individual organizations. When you create an organization, it inherits its plan from your subscription. This means a single account can own multiple organizations and each organization will share the owner’s plan.

For more information on how organizations and ownership work, see Organizations. For what happens to the plan when an organization changes owner, see Account access and ownership.

Shorebird charges based on successful patch installs. A “patch install” is a successful update applied on a customer’s device.

  • Patch installs are only billed upon successful download and application of a patch.
  • Users always skip to the latest patch. If you send two patches before a user updates, you’re only billed for one patch install for that user.
  • You are not charged if the user never launches the patched application.

You can view your current patch installs in your account page on the Shorebird Console. These numbers are updated hourly.

When your patch installs pass what your plan includes, overages let you keep shipping patches, billed per install. They’re available on Pro and Business plans, monthly or annual, and they’re off until you turn them on. On Enterprise, overage terms are set in your contract. With overages off, patches stop installing once you’ve used your plan’s included installs, until the next billing period; see Patches stopped installing on devices.

To turn overages on or off, or to cap what they can cost:

  1. Open the Plan page (Account, then Manage plan).
  2. Under your patch install usage, click Configure overages.
  3. Check Overages enabled. To stop patches once overages reach a set amount, also check Overage spending cap and enter the cap in dollars or installs.
  4. Save the change.

Configure overages is hidden while a payment is past due.

Shorebird emails the members of the organizations on your plan when installs reach 80% of your limit, and again when they reach it. The limit is your plan’s included installs, plus your spending cap if you set one. With overages on and no cap, there’s no limit, so these emails aren’t sent.

Overages are billed monthly, on the invoice after the month they were used. On an annual plan, they’re a separate monthly invoice from your plan’s.

On a monthly Pro plan ($20 a month, including 50,000 patch installs) with overages on, if you use 100,000 patch installs every month:

  • You’re billed $20 when you subscribe.
  • Each month after that, you’re billed $40: $20 for the new month, plus $20 for the previous month’s 50,000 overage installs.

On an annual plan, your included installs are counted over the whole year. With overages on, a spending cap, if you set one, limits each month’s overages.
